Pakistan attaches immense value to its ties with EU: Firdous

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan has said that government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan, is committed to well-being of the weaker and neglected segments of the society.

Talking to Ambassador of European Union to Pakistan Androulla Kaminara who called on her in Islamabad on Friday, she said the government also has a resolve for women empowerment and providing opportunities to the youth to excel in different spheres.

She said that freedom of speech is a key component of democracy and media enjoys unprecedented freedom in Pakistan.

The Special Assistant said Pakistan attaches immense values to its ties with the European Union as both share and cherish the same democratic values and pluralism.

She emphasized the need to carry forward the current positive momentum by working to establish a sustained and long term strategic partnership. She said that present democratic dispensation has initiated well-conceived programme of bringing reforms and ensuring transparency in matters of governance.

The EU ambassador wondered that Pakistan’s image abroad is not a true reflection of how great this country actually is.

She also highlighted various initiatives and programs of EU in Pakistan besides provision of assistance to earthquake victims.

Androulla Kaminara also briefed the Special Assistant regarding Human Rights Reel Film festival being held in various cities of Pakistan from 1st to 10th of next month.

She said the festival will showcase over 27 films with themes such as freedom of expression, gender equality, minority rights and climate change.

Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan and the Ambassador also agreed to strengthen cooperation in the field of media besides by promoting exchange of visits by journalists and media persons with the view to learning from each other’s experiences and best practices in different fields.
