Hashmat Habib President Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Adlia has said Pakistan Bar Council is supreme body of Lawyers who are responsible to establish rule of law but their elected member Mr. Shafqat Mehmood has publically confessed that votes were purchased against Rs 25 lacks or higher rates and indulgence of political parties.
The corrupt practice in election of members of Senate and Pakistan Bar Council has become talk of the town which requires rectification. He said the selection of Superior Court judges is also under severe criticism which is injurious to the entire judicial system.
The veteran lawyer has repeatedly suggested that members of PBC should be elected directly Province-wise by the enrolled advocates of High Courts while election of Senate be scrapped and replace it by the sitting members of Provincial Assemblies in rotation to sit as members of parliament and perform law making functions only. The suggested way will also save at least salaries of Senate members, he added.
According to Hashmat Habib this confession is continuity of previous complaints regarding corrupt practices in election of members of PBC including the acts of favouring the members of Provincial Bar Councils in several manners similarly the horse-trading in Senate election is an admitted fact which is strongly condemned by the legal fraternity.
The senior lawyer advised that this issue must be resolved by adopting direct election of the members of PBC and Senate and also the sitting members of councils and Bar Association should not be considered for appointment of judges unless expiry of their tenure.
